This time last year Winnsboro Center for the Arts (WCA) had just reopened after closing its doors for three months. It remained mostly empty of the people who usually bring so much life and laughter. In the past month or so we have been so happy to see more and more people gradually fill the center once again. As you enter the main building of the center, you can hear the sound of power tools while The Bowery Stage gets a makeover as the players for “Doublewide, Texas” prepare for WCA’s first theater production of the year (shows will run Fridays and Saturdays, June 11-12 and June 18-19 at 7:30 pm; Sunday Matinees June 13 and 20 at 2:30 pm). You can hear the sound of mic checks as musicians prepare for concerts. You can hear the sound of volunteers and visitors greeting friends they haven’t seen in over a year. You can also hear music lessons and the sound of joyous laughter during ceramics classes and art workshops drifting down the halls of “the annex” at 212 Market Street.
The six summer camps (four art camps and two theater camps) WCA will have this summer and the new Dreamscapes exhibit in the gallery will bring fabulously new pops of color this summer! Starting on June 14th the summer art camps for children and teens will begin. They will be filled with children and teens exploring all types of art including ceramics, painting, drawing, fiber arts, and more. The theater improv camp, Improv is Fun!, is sure to make the center come alive with creative expression and improvisational acting exercises. We’re also pleased to announce that we recently added another two-week theater camp that will begin in July that will be directed by Scott Bowman. This will be a musical theater camp and although all campers who register will be in the musical, auditions for parts will be held on Saturday, June 26th, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at 200 Market Street. If you have a kiddo between the ages of 9 and 12 (or has completed third grade) and who loves acting and singing then be sure to register them for musical theater camp before auditions on June 26th so that they are ready for camp July 19th to July 30th.
We were very impressed with the number of entries submitted to the Dreamscapes exhibit. As the title of the exhibit suggests, this exhibit is an intriguing collection of works from godly visions to fantasies and even nightmares. Artists were even inspired to portray their vision and dreams for the future, or to even transport the viewer to places unknown. This exhibit will be in the WCA gallery from June 12th to July 31st. We hope you come help us celebrate the artists’ work at our reception on Sunday, June 27th at 2:30 pm.
There are a few new art workshops for adults in the month of June as well. There is the ever-popular Acrylic Paint Pour workshop with instructor Marilyn Arnaud on June 11th, a Mosaic Jewelry workshop with instructor Julie Dilling on June 12th, and a new instructor named Chanel Beauchamp will be joining us to teach a Beginner Crochet Workshop on June 25th. In this Beginner Crochet Workshop students will learn how to crochet cute toy bunnies.
Along with art and music being offered at WCA, we will be welcoming a new yoga instructor named Samantha Moore. She will be teaching yoga classes every week on Mondays and Wednesdays. Hatha Yoga will be every Monday and Wednesday at 9:00 am and Power Yoga with be every Monday and Wednesday at 8:00 pm. If you are interested in any of our classes, workshops, music lessons, or more please give us a call at (903)342-0686 or visit our website at www.winnsborocenterforthearts.com for more information.
